 The Higher Modern Studies exam has two question papers. Question Paper 1 is worth 52 marks and lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes. Pupils answer three extended-response questions: two worth 20 marks and one worth 12 marks. These questions assess knowledge, understanding, analysis and evaluation.

Pupils choose a contemporary Modern Studies issue involving alternative views, carry out research using a range of sources, analyse their findings, evaluate evidence and reach a supported decision.
