The Advanced Higher Modern Studies course covers three broad areas with students specialising in one: Political Issues, Law and Order, and Social Inequality. Students also study research methods and source evaluation as part of the course.

A major feature of Advanced Higher is the comparative approach. Students are expected to analyse complex issues in the UK, including Scotland where relevant, and compare them with international examples. This means students need to understand not only what happens, but why it happens, how different systems compare, and what conclusions can reasonably be drawn.

The Advanced Higher Modern Studies question paper is worth 90 marks, lasts 3 hours, and makes up 64% of the course assessment. Students choose one of the three optional sections of the paper and answer questions from that section only.

A successful dissertation requires much more than a good topic. Students need a focused title, a clear research strategy, effective source selection, sound methodology, strong analysis, sustained argument, accurate referencing and a well-supported conclusion.
